Australia-Indonesia community health initiative

Growing Health Together

Tumbuh Health Initiative aims to partner with local stakeholders in Temanggung, Central Java to support and strengthen community-based family planning, maternal health, and child health workshops.

About the initiative

Community-rooted health support shaped by local experience.

In parts of rural Central Java, early marriage and early pregnancy can sharply narrow a young woman's access to education, work, and long-term autonomy. Tumbuh Health Initiative aims to support local efforts working with families, young mothers, and communities in that context.

The initiative aims to take a practical and collaborative approach. Rather than replacing existing efforts, it aims to partner with local communities, health workers, and institutions to strengthen trusted health workshops and make them more relevant, participatory, and responsive to community needs.

01

Existing workshops can feel one-way

Some health sessions remain highly didactic, which can limit trust, discussion, and practical impact.

02

Evidence is still too limited

There is not yet enough structured feedback or research to fully understand the scale of the challenge or which approaches are most effective.

03

Funding restricts reach

Workshop delivery is often constrained by available funding, which limits how many sessions can be run and how far support can extend.

Local insight

Built from lived experience, not distance.

This work is informed by conversations with community health workers, local volunteers, and people already doing the hard work on the ground in rural Central Java.

How we respond

Three ways we aim to strengthen existing programs.

The pilot aims to support family planning, maternal health, and child health workshops while improving how those workshops are designed, measured, and sustained.

Co-learning workshops

Tumbuh Health Initiative aims to support a shift from one-way teaching toward more participatory workshops shaped by co-learning principles and local cultural insight.

Feedback and research

The initiative aims to use community feedback, co-design, and formal research to strengthen workshop delivery and better understand impact.

Partnerships for scale

Tumbuh Health Initiative aims to partner with government, institutional, and grant-making stakeholders to expand what is possible over time.

Our approach

We believe lasting health improvement grows from trusted relationships, local knowledge, and steady support for the people already doing the work.

Why Tumbuh

“Tumbuh” means to grow in Bahasa Indonesia. The initiative aims to help community health efforts grow stronger, more connected, and more sustainable over time.
